Riders on the Storm

Quick post tonight. There is a storm raging outside my window. And perhaps, just perhaps, there may be a storm on the horizon for our intrepid trio.

“Haven’t you ever wondered why cities were abandoned?”

Sometimes, Amanda wondered if Charlotte was psychic. She had just opened her mouth to ask why they were all on a ship heading for Spain and, supposedly, the lost city of Atlantis, when Charlotte asked the surprising question.

“I know why ancient cities were abandoned. I am an archaeologist and a historian, if you remember.” Amanda had a feeling that snide remark wouldn’t sit well with Charlotte, but she hated the way that the green eyed beauty still treated her like some new recruit. After all, Amanda had been with them for two years now and had become quite adept with the special tools needed for their job.

“Enlighten me, then.” Charlotte turned her emerald eyes on Amanda.

“Well, there are a myriad of reasons why a city might have failed. Resources could have been used up, weather and natural events could have caused the area to become uninhabitable, war, disease; take your pick.”

François let out a little musical chuckle from his deck chair. “Pick your battles wisely, chère.”

Amanda ignored him and waited for Charlotte’s reply.

“A typical scholar’s response.” There was a sharpness in Charlotte’s tone that implied she’d had this conversation many times before. “The truth is far simpler.”

“Are you saying that all of the history we have on past civilizations is wrong?”

“I am saying that it is incomplete. And it isn’t just past civilizations. This is still going on.”

Amanda shook her head, “What is going on?”

“There are monsters under the earth, Amanda. You know that. We are going to this dig site to make sure that whatever killed Atlantis doesn’t come back.”
